What’s on your summer reading list? No matter what your interests, there’s an abundance of useful resources to help you discover and navigate great reads. Here’s a few tools and sites:

Good Reads
This online community of readers helps you keep track of what you read, what you want to read, and what you’re currently reading. It’s Facebook for book lovers.

Literary Reference Center
This is a database the Library subscribes to for our students, faculty, and staff. It offers articles, plot summaries, literary criticism and a lot more on just about any author. If you’re off-campus, you’ll be prompted to login using your MSJ AllCard.

NPR Books
A subsection of the main NPR site, this offers a wealth of reviews, genres to browse, and lists of current fiction and non-fiction.

Library Catalogs
Need to know if the Cincinnati Public Library has a book? Check out our listing of local academic and public library websites and links to their catalogs which will allow you to look up by author, title, subject, or keyword the book, film, magazine, etc. that you’re wanting.

Remembering Maurice Sendak

Beloved children’s author, Maurice Sendak, died two weeks ago. Many of us grew up reading his tales of imaginative worlds and eccentric characters. One of my most favorite was his Nutshell Library that contains four palm-sized books including Chicken Soup with Rice, One was Johnny, and Pierre: A Cautionary Tale.

Library Open During Construction

The Library at the College of Mount St. Joseph will remain open during construction by the administration building this summer. Wheelchair parking is available at the west parking lot with the spots facing the recital hall. If you need wheelchair elevator access to the Library from the parking lot, go through the theatre lobby to the elevator in the classroom building and take it to the ground level. Turn left off the elevator, go past fiscal operations and through the tunnel. Look for the sign on Library 19′s door which asks you to call 244-4307 where a library faculty member will escort you upstairs.

What WorldCat can do for you…

Are you familiar with WorldCat? All libraries have catalogs ( e.g., MSJ’s library catalog= FOCUS focus.msj.edu) that show patrons what items they have in their collection, but WorldCat is unique in that it aggregates library holdings world-wide. If you want to know if a library in Canada has a copy of Moby Dick, or more practically, if your local library has a copy, WordCat helps you find it.

Other cool things WordCat offers includes a mobile app and a citation tool which will format book titles in a number of formats including APA, MLA and Chicago style.

Elizabeth Catlett

Printmaker and activist, Elizabeth Catlett died recently. If you are a student of MSJ Art professor, Craig Lloyd, you’re probably well acquainted with Catlett’s wood block prints.

An exquisite resource on Catlett in the MSJ Library’s collection that is currently available for checkout is the book Elizabeth Catlett: and American Artist in Mexico.

April is National Poetry Month!

In celebration of National Poetry Month, check out our Aaron R. Levine Poetry Special Collections. It houses modernist to contemporary poetry books including anthologies and some theoretical works, such as Susan Stewart’s Poetry and the Fate of the Senses. In the Levine collection you’ll find poets as diverse as Frank O’Hara to Gary Soto.
